Angels is an International Children's Charity that advocates for the rights of the world’s poorest and disadvantaged children. Launched in 2006 to educate and enfranchise children through the power of music we started with UK tours of music and dance groups made up of rehabilitated street children. They came from Nigeria, South Africa, Rwanda and Kenya and even performed at two Save the Children humanitarian awards ceremonies in Madrid. Every penny raised went back into the children’s communities and changed lives.
Download our first ever single by Tom Dunne for just 79p and feed 8 street children living in The Hem in South Africa.
For 2014 we are launching two projects with our affiliate partners in South Africa that will serve as templates to export around the world, wherever children are in need. These projects are designed to take children out of poverty, give them the opportunity to learn through music and the very real aspiration of reintegrating back into society.
Our projects meet the United Nation’s Millennium development goals; a series of collective priorities for peace and security, poverty reduction, the environment and human rights. We plan to roll them out globally to give every child a chance.
Angels is a not-for-profit volunteer led organisation. Every single penny we raise goes towards creating positive change which has a lasting and profound impact on the lives of the children and their communities. We are without political agenda or religious orientation.
The Hem is a feeding programme located in the informal settlement in Huhundi not far from Johannesburg. We are already able to feed 150 children two days a week; that’s great but we have had to turn away another 150, that’s unacceptable.
We feed the children and then we can teach them. We have created and are currently trialing a musical, phonics based teaching system in a ‘pop up’ school within ‘The Hem’. Our packs are based on traditional music and songs and are also suitable for children who are traumatised and with learning disabilities. As we teach we learn….our aim is to engage the children through music and then work with them to understand their personal circumstances and tailor a plan to integrate them back into society.
The reality of children living in extreme poverty and on the street poses great chalenges. Angels had developed initiatives that provide a lifeline, help to restore self-esteem, provide hope and make the transition back into society and school life easier.
